OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) is a thief! It steals your life. In a previous article we’ve discussed in detail what OCD is and how it develops (Root cause analysis).
But the question on our mind is: Does Hypnotherapy work for OCD? Yes it does, and even better, I can summarise this with 3 core reasons as to why…
1) Reason One: OCD is Hypnosis
Huh! Confused by what you just read, don’t be! Every single person that suffers from OCD, usually describes the obsessive ritual they carry out, as if they feel like they’re in a ‘zone-like state’.
During any hypnotic state, there’s a narrowing down of your focus of attention at a given trigger, a feeling of ‘time disappearing’ during hours of (for example) hand washing. You become inwardly absorbed as the imagination becomes more ‘real’ than external reality. Sounds familiar to the above doesn’t it?
But there is also the subconscious mind to consider…
2) Reason Two: Hypnosis communicates with the ‘problem part’ of the mind
Hypnosis deals directly with the source of the problem (Root cause analysis). As OCD is second nature in most sufferers, the problem doesn’t reside in the conscious part of the mind. Since it’s become instinctive, the onlyway to identify and rectify the problem, is within the subconscious mind.
The patterns of thoughts and learned behaviours must be identified and reframed using the power of suggestions. This deep level of subconscious reprogramming, can only be applied with hypnotherapy.
3) Reason Three: Hypnosis is a great way to extract the fear from OCD
What if you could become totally relaxed with the thought of - and the reality of – not performing your OCD ritual? The power would be taken away from the OCD right there. Which is why it’s important to remember: OCD is fuelled by fear!
In the treatment of OCD, it’s both intelligent and practical to focus on taking the fear out of not carrying out some compulsive behaviour. This is where self-hypnosis is so powerful, as we know OCD stems from anxiety. But what if you teach your subconscious mind to decondition the anxiety around not carrying out OCD rituals. Well when we do this, the OCD can evaporate amazingly fast!
There are many other reasons why self-hypnosis is great for treating OCD, but these are the three core reasons that really count. It’s also important to understand that, for genuine change to happen at the feeling level, hypnosis (a new way of focusing the mind), must occur.
Get ready, because here’s the most important takeaway point to remember: OCD isn’t really a ‘thought disorder’. It’s a ‘feeling disorder’ – even an ‘imagination disorder’. So it makes sense to treat a ‘hypnotic condition’ with hypnosis.
